The beginning of a new year is exciting — filled with hope and new possibilities.  As we reflect on the year behind us, it’s an opportunity to discover what we want to change for the year ahead.  Typically we focus on personal resolutions…but what about our business?  Our business also needs attention this time of year, whether our resolution is to blog more (or start one!), learn social media, improve client communications, or simply to keep up with your expense reports.  The video below, while focused on personal resolutions, has some wonderful tips for making your resolutions a reality:

A key takeaway for me was to designate a “New Me Team” for my business…people I respect who have an unbiased, outside view of my business and where I have room for improvement.  I’m also a big fan of celebrating minor victories along the way. Focus on the positive and what you DID achieve, then focus on continuous improvement.

Please leave a comment below to let me know what your business resolution for the New Year and/or one strategy you’re putting in place to achieve it.

    Hi Stacy,
Thanks for the reminder about counting small successes along the way to meeting large goals. I like celebrating both large and small successes anytime. Today I am celebrating the completion of my first blog post for the Ultimate Blogging Challenge. Great work on your blog. Happy New Year!

The way I see it, small successes are critical for keeping us motivated toward achieving our goals…and I’m all about celebrating the small stuff! Thanks for commenting on my very first blog post. I look forward to participating in the Ultimate Blog Challenge with you!

While “resolutions” aren’t my favorite, I do have one top priority for my biz this year. I am going to finish my almost-done book and get it published. There. How’s that for a resolution?? LOL

  4. Stacy Ryan Says:

That is a wonderful priority, Martha! I know many people that have an unfinished book looming over them. I think it’s important to focus on the actions it will take to get there, such as writing 20 minutes a day, or 1 hour a week, or 1 chapter a week, and then have mini-rewards along the way. Before you know it, the book will be finished!

    Hi Stacy,

Couldn’t get the video, it’s ‘not available’ in France. But I’d love to know how you get them to show up on your blog – I’ve been having issues with that on mine. This year, I’m like you – I created my new year’s resolutions for my business, and I’m so psyched and motivated! Now I’m in the process of breaking them down into monthly and then weekly objectives. 2011 is going to be a fabulous year1

  6. Stacy Ryan Says:

Hi Cheryl, sorry you couldn’t see the video. I got the video on the site from http://www.youtube.com, and they have buttons to “share” and “encode” videos. Clicking on “share” just gives you a link on your blog, while “encode” gives you the HTML code to embed the video on your site. I just took the code and inserted it into the HTML tab on the blog post area. Not sure what video source you’re using, though perhaps there is an option to get this code. You’re much farther along in the planning process than I am, breaking down your goals into monthly/weekly objectives. You’re getting ME motivated to do the same! All the best to you and your business in 2011!

  7. Annie Infinite Says:

I so agree with you Stacy, we work at homes especially need to keep ourselves motivated and if I have a large or arduous task to complete I will give myself a certain amount of time to get it done and then hold out a carrot in the future just for me – it might be getting my hair done, or coffee with friends…

Like little rewards along the way they make me feel that it is all worthwhile 🙂

  8. Stacy Ryan Says:

    I like your “carrots” Annie!

  9. Melanie Kissell Says:

Stacy — your blog looks great and I’m delighted to meet you. I discovered you over at Miz Martha’s blog. She’s a hoot, a wonderful friend, an awesome blogger, and a darned savvy marketer!

Like Hannah mentioned, my favorite line in your post is “I’m also a big fan of celebrating minor victories along the way.” I may be a little quirky, but I enjoy and embrace the celebration of little accomplishments a lot more than grandiose victories. Chances are we’ll have a bigger number of tiny victories in life and in business than major ones so, what the heck? That means we’ll have a lot more opportunities to celebrate. 🙂

    Write On!

  10. Stacy Ryan Says:

I like the way you think, Melanie! May your 2011 be filled with celebrations!

  11. Jena Rodriguez Says:

Love this Stacy! Great blog start. YES, a “New Me Team” is perfect for this year. Just being able to share ideas, bounce thoughts off others is soooo valuable.

  12. Stacy Ryan Says:

REALLY glad you like the “New Me Team” — since you’re a part of it! 🙂 Looking forward to a great 2011 with you!
